How do you file for Social Security? PDF Print E-mail

A Social Security claim can be filed online or in person.

If filing online, simply go to http://www.socialsecurity.gov/.  There, you will be able to answer all the questions, get lists of all documentation and information that you will need and track your social security claim from initial application through the entire process.

Alternatively, you may file in person at your local social security claim office.  Simply call 1-800-772-1213 and make an appointment to appear in person.  It’s also possible to set up the initial interview over the phone.  Typically, the initial disability claim interview should last no more than an hour or so.

If you are hearing impaired you may call the Social Security TTY number at 1-800-325-0778 during normal business hours.

A Dsability Starter Kit will be mailed to you before your scheduled appointment to help get you ready for the first interview.  You can also download the starter kit online at www.socialsecurity.gov/disability.
